Our sustainability aspirations.

People are at the heart of our business. we take a holistic approach to health & wellbeing from the built environment to care and support.

We are committed to protecting our environment. We work with nature to enrich biodiversity and reduce our impact.

We strive towards life without waste and eliminate waste from our daily operations and supply chain, committing to a path of continuous improvement.

We are committed to reduce our carbon footprint by systematically deploying energy saving measures and promoting renewable energy.

Water is vital for the health of our environment and communities. We prioritise water conservation and seize unrealised opportunities for the collection, storage, conservation and use of water.

We actively embrace and  engage with our community and directly support the principle of shared economic development.

We strive to lead and create best practice. Sustainability is integrated into our operating procedures and organisational culture.

Through our commitments, education and collaboration, we involve stakeholders and partners in our sustainability aspirations and integrate them into a responsibility process.

Our organisational culture is underpinned by extraordinary social, cultural and professional diversity. We continuously support personal growth with the goal of offering motivating and rewarding career opportunities.

People & Wellbeing

People & wellbeing.

People are at the heart of our business and form the foundation to our approach from the built environment to care and support. We build beautiful places with extensive amenity enabling an uncompromised lifestyle.

We believe that having a comprehensive range of care options within our villages is essential to meet the evolving needs of our residents, and they can seamlessly transition to the appropriate level of support while remaining within their familiar and cherished community.

Working with nature.

Pāpāmoa Beach is an important recreational area for the local community and an important conservation area with its unique dunes and fragile coastal ecosystem. The Pāpāmoa sand dunes have faced erosion due to many environmental factors, and significant work has gone into restoring the dunes by dedicated community groups, organisations, and village residents.

The 'Generus Living Bay of Plenty Pāpāmoa Beach Conservation Project' was named finalist at the RVA Sustainability Awards in the Operator-led Sustainability Award category in 2023. Nature-based activities are also strongly integrated into our care activity programmes throughout the country.

Waste blueprint.

According to the Generus Living Resident Sustainability Survey, waste minimisation is something most of the residents think about in their daily lives.

With our large hospitality offering, designing waste out of our operations is something we work towards daily. Some of our villages have achieved a remarkable 90+% diversion rate from landfill. We are also proud to be part of the University of Otago Aged Care Food Waste Research Pilot Project.

Renewable energy.

Pacific Lakes community facility’s, Lake House, sustainable design has been focused on optimising solar gain and passive ventilation and is supplemented by solar power.

Generus Living has been building infrastructure with rapid chargers now being installed in three of our villages and more electric vehicles joining the fleet every year.

LED lights are used throughout the villages, including streetlights to name a few initiatives in this space.

Water design.

Highlighting the sustainable ethos of the Pacific Lakes Village, its first community facility Lake House, has its own rainwater recycling system.

Central to the village is the creation of its own ecosystem via a series of waterways, the lakes have been developed as a sustainable stormwater retention system, fed from rainwater and natural aquifers that will support the regeneration of plant and birdlife.

Irrigation systems are a focus with The Russley Village being the first fully completed scheme designed to meet sustainability standards in a retirement village setting in New Zealand. The irrigation system is an enabler and supports the village award winning gardens to excel with the least possible amount of water.

Panel 9 - Lakehouse

Community spirit.

There are so many great initiatives throughout the country with village residents giving back to the community through volunteering and supporting important causes. Some of the most rewarding programmes are in collaboration with our local schools from Garden to Table and buddy reading, to bringing joy to the village communities through school performances.

We are also very proud of our Ebba Te Tua Scholarship programme in the Bay of Plenty. The annual scholarship supports the professional and educational development of Mangatawa uri [descendants] who have chosen to pursue a career in education and are committed to the revitalisation of Te Reo Māori.

Leading and creating best practice through innovation is something we strive for. The aim of these innovations is to enhance resident wellbeing. Whether it be, our custom built resident portal Connect, a digital meal ordering platform or integration of virtual reality experiences in the care setting.

Meaningful conversations.

Engaging in conversation across all stakeholder groups has been a critical element in our approach to sustainability from surveys, workshops, case studies to storytelling. Sharing learnings and celebrating achievements has proven to be very powerful in the creation of change.

Generus Living is an active member of RVA Sustainability Committee working on many industry initiatives and benchmarking projects.
